NBA History of Science Seminar
Mark Walker, "Werner Heisenberg and National Socialism."
Werner Heisenberg is one of the most influential scientists in the twentieth century, helping create the quantum mechanics and proposing the uncertainty principle.
However, he remains controversial not mainly because of his physics, rather because of his ambiguous relationship with National Socialism. This talk will examine this relationship.
Mark Walker is an expert on natural science under National Socialism and especially the Nazi efforts to develop nuclear energy. His books include German National Socialism and the Quest for Nuclear Power 1939--1949 (Cambridge: Cambridge Univerity Press, 1989) and Nazi Science: Myth, Truth, and the German Atomic Bomb (New York and London: Plenum Press, 1995).
